Holistic Prayer and Discernment - THST 698.05 / CNTX 968.01 - Prof. Wilkie Au, Ph.D.
Mon-Thurs, 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 Noon, University Hall 3328

This course will focus on approaches to Christian prayer and discernment that recognize and respect the body-spirit or psychosomatic unity of the person. Spiritual practices that engage the head and heart, masculine and feminine energy will be explored and experienced.

Dr. Au is adjunct professor of theology at LMU and director of Spiritual Development Services in Westchester. His books include By Way of the Heart, Urgings of the Heart, and most recently, The Enduring Heart: Spirituality for the Long Haul.

Julian of Norwich - THST 698.06 / CNTX 968.02 - Prof. Roberta C. Bondi, Ph.D.
Mon-Thurs, 1:00 - 4:00 p.m., University Hall 3328

In this course we will ponder Julian's words as they impact our heads and hearts on such spiritually difficult issues as the identification and meaning of our own religious experience, the question of gender and the Trinity, the identity of Jesus, our ability to believe deeply in God's love, and the meaning of God's promises to her that "all shall be well." In this process we will reflect on how our deep convictions keep us from God and how, with the help of Julian, we can seek healing.

Dr. Bondi is professor of church history at Candler School of Theology, Emory University, in Atlanta, GA, and a founding member of Emmaus, and ecumenical house church; among her books are Memories of God: Theological Reflections on a Life and Night on the Flint River.

Heart To Heart: The Salesian Tradition of Prayer - THST 698.07 / CNTX 968.03 - Prof. Wendy Wright, Ph.D.
Mon-Thurs, 4:30 - 7:30 p.m., University Hall 3328

This course will explore, both theoretically and experientially, the rich heritage of prayer in the Salesian tradition founded by Saints Francis de Sales and Jane de Chantal. At its core is a vision of an interconnected world of human hearts intertwined in the heart of God. From Francis' popular Introduction to the Devout Life come spiritual practices for laypersons in all walks of life. From Jane and the Order of the Visitation come teachings on contemplative prayer.

Dr. Wright is a Professor of Theology at Creighton University and director of the Center for the Study of Catholicism. Her academic work has focused on the Salesian spiritual tradition. Among her publications are Bond of Perfection, and several other books on Francis de Sales and Jane de Chantal.
