Catholic Bible Institute - Summer Session 2003

Co-Sponsored by the Office of Religious Education at the Archdiocese of Los Angeles,
and the Center for Religion and Spirituality at Loyola Marymount University.

The third annual "Catholic Bible Institute - Summer Session" will explore "The Moral Challenges of the Bible". Each day a renowned biblical scholar will address a particular topic around the main theme.

We encourage you to attend the entire Institute (all five days), but participants who can only attend on certain days will not be at a disadvantage, since each day is structured to "stand alone," according to the expertise of the respective presenters.

Prof. Carol J. Dempsey, OP, PhD

Dr. Dempsey, associate professor of theology at the University of Portland, is the author of The Prophets: A Liberation-Critical Reading, and co-editor of All Creation Is Groaning: An Interdisciplinary Vision for Life in a Sacred Universe and of Theology and Sacred Scripture.

Prof. Daniel Smith-Christopher, PhD

Dr. Smith-Christopher, professor of theology and director of peace studies at LMU, has published commentaries on several Old Testament books, is the editor of Subverting Hatred: The Challenge of Nonviolence in World Religions, and the author of A Biblical Theology of Exile.

Dr. Siker, professor of New Testament and chair of the department of theological studies at LMU, is the author of Scripture and Ethics: Twentieth Century Portraits, and the editor of Homosexuality in the Church: Both Sides of the Debate.

The Hebrew Bible as a Moral Guide

1) How does the Bible offer us a moral "how-to" and "how not to", in a variety of perspectives?
2) How do key ideas and texts influence our perception and reading of morality in the Bible and in life?
3) How did the ancient Rabbis, and how can we, find sacred lessons in morally troubling texts?
4) How can we respect the moral authority of tradition and the calling of our consciences, which sometimes conflict?

Rabbi Debra Orenstein, BHL, MA, Ord

Rabbi Orenstein, spiritual leader of Makom Ohr Shalom synagogue in Tarazna, CA, is author or editor of six books, including the award-winning Lifecycles series. She is a senior fellow of the Wilstein Institute of Jewish Policy Studies, and an instructor at the University of Judaism.

Rev. Jean-Pierre Ruiz, STD

Fr. Ruiz, associate professor of biblical studies at St. John's University in New York, is editor of the Journal of Hispanic/Latino Theology, associate editor of the Catholic Biblical Quarterly, and active in several ecumenical and inter-religious dialogues.

Schedule: June 16-20, 2003; Monday - Friday; 9:00am - 4:00pm daily

Location: Roski Dining Room, in University Hall, at Loyola Marymount University

Fees: $200.00 for the whole series (all five days)   or   $50.00 per day (on a space available basis)
Housing is available on an optional basis (see below). Please make checks payable to the Office of Religious Education.

Registration: The Summer Bible Institute is open to all, but space is limited to 200 people.  Registrations will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis, but priority will be given to those who register for the whole series.

C.E. Credit:

By arrangement with the Center for Religion and Spirituality at Loyola Marymount University, anyone attending the entire series (all five days) can earn 2.0 Continuing Education Units at no additional charge. Applications for C.E. credit will be processed on the first day of the Summer Institute.

In-Service and Re-Certification:

The Summer Bible Institute can be used by Catechists and Catholic School Teachers for re-certification and in-service, offered in cooperation with the following Archdiocesan Offices:

Office of Continuing Formation for Clergy
Office of Diaconate Formation

On-Campus Housing and Meals (optional):

Housing is available on the LMU campus from June 15 - June 21.  Participants will stay in modern air-conditioned apartments (2 bedrooms, 1 bath, kitchen, living room) on a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean.  A Continental Breakfast will be provided each morning. Other mMeals can be purchased on an individual basis at various locations on and off campus.  For further details, please contact Fr. Felix Just, SJ.

$20.00 per person, per night, shared room in a shared apartment
$40.00 per person, per night, private room in a shared apartment
$80.00 per person, per night, complete apartment

Advance Reservations are mandatory for on-campus housing; your registration form with full payment must be received by the Office of Religious Education before May 31, 2003.
