Catholic Bible Institute - Summer Session 2002 
"The Bible & Violence"

June 10-14, 2002

Co-Sponsored by the Office of Religious Education at the Archdiocese of Los Angeles,
and the Center for Religion and Spirituality at Loyola Marymount University.

The second annual "Catholic Bible Institute - Summer Session" will explore the theme of "The Bible & Violence". Each day a renowned biblical scholar will address a particular topic around the main theme.

We encourage you to attend the entire Institute (all five days), but participants who have a scheduling conflict can rest assured that each day is structured to "stand alone," as it were, according to the expertise of the respective presenters.

Fr. Lawrence Boadt, CSP

Fr. Boadt taught at Washington Theological Union for twenty-two years and is currently the Publisher of Paulist Press in New York.

June 11

"The Jewish People and the Christian Bible": Reflections and Implications

A recently appointed member of the Pontifical Biblical Commission, Fr. Senior will guide us through the PBC's latest document: "The Jewish People and the Christian Bible." This remarkable statement on Catholic-Jewish relations brings us to consider the issues of anti-Judaism and anti-Semitism.

Fr. Donald Senior, CP

Fr. Senior si the President of the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago, where he also teaches New Testament Studies. A popular speaker and lecturer, he has written extensively on biblical topics.

Violence, Zeal, and Love: the Career of Paul the Apostle

Using four of Robert Duvall's great film roles as touchstones, these presentations will explore dimensions of violence in Paul's life and teaching:

1) The Apostle: Violent Believer, Zealous Missioner (Acts 22:1-21; Phil 3:4-11)
2) Apocalypse Now: Savage Rhetoric and Salvific Truths (Rom 1:16-2:29)
3) The Great Santinii: Divine and Apostolic Fatherhood (2 Cor 11:1-15)
4) Tomorrow: Sacrifice and Endurance (2 Cor 4:7-18)

Dr. Regina Plunkett-Dowling

Prof. PLunkett-Dowling teaches theology at Fordham University in New York. Her academic interests include the use of the Hebrew Bible by NT authors, women in scripture, and all things Pauline.

Fr. John Donahue, SJ

Fr. Donahue, the Raymond E. Brown Distinguished Professor of New Testament Studies at St. Mary's Seminary and University in Baltimore, has written many books and articles.

Dr. Gina Hens-Piazza

Prof. Hens-Piazza teaches at the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley. She writes and lectures extensively on the prophets, the Bible and culture, and women's issues in biblical interpretation

Registration: The Summer 2002 Bible Institute is open to all, but space is limited to 150 people.  Registrations will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis, but priority will be given to those who register for the whole series.

C.E. Credit:

By arrangement with the Center for Religion and Spirituality at Loyola Marymount University, anyone attending the entire series (all five days) can earn 2.0 Continuing Education Units at no additional charge. For further details, please contact Fr. Felix Just, SJ.

In-Service and Re-Certification:

The Summer Bible Institute can be used by Catechists and Catholic School Teachers for re-certification and in-service, offered in cooperation with the following Archdiocesan Offices:

Office of Diaconate Formation

On-Campus Housing and Dining (optional):

Room and Board is available on the LMU campus from June 9 - June 15. Participants will be housed in modern air-conditioned apartments on a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Meals provided by Marriott Food Services can be taken in LMU's spacious dining rooms. For further details, please contact Fr. Felix Just, SJ.

$20.00 per person, per night, double room (shared kitchen and bath)
$40.00 per person, per night, single room (shared kitchen and bath)

$25.00 per day (breakfast, lunch, and dinner)
$8.25 per lunch only

Advance Reservations are mandatory for Room and Board. If you wish on-campus housing and/or meals, your registration form with full payment must be received by the Office of Religious Education before May 24, 2002.
